Dont miss a visit to the many tourist attractions of Münster, especially to the Prinzipalmarkt square: thanks to its vicinity to the Hanseatic League, the city of Munster flourished. Many merchants offered their goods on the prinicipal market of Münster, the richest among them chose to settle down in Münster and built impressive residences with gables and arcades. Due to heavy bomb damage, only two original buildings have survived until today; the others having been rebuilt in a more modest manner, but according to the original scheme. On the same street, you will also find the town hall, the most important building on the Prinzipalmarkt square both from an architectural and a historical point of view. It is often considered the most beautiful example of secular gothic architecture in Europe.
St. Lambert's church is the second largest church of Münster. It is situated on the crossroads between the three major market squares Prinzipalmarkt, Roggenmarkt and Alter Fischmarkt. Built in gothic style, the church is inspired by the cathedral of Freiburg. St. Lambert's church impressively demonstrates the wealth of Münster's merchants and citizens.
The Schloss is a baroque palace that serves today as an administrative center for Münster's university. It cannot be visited from inside. Behind it lies the botanical garden of the university, a place of plurality and peace that is absolutely worth a visit. On the Hindenburg square in front of the Schloss, Münster celebrates the "Send" festival three times a year - with over 1 million visitors the biggest regular festivity nearby. Originally a relgious synode (hence the name "Send") accompanied by an inter-regional market, it is today a colourful and popular event for Münster's inhabitants and visitors. Severe laws used to protect the peace during the "Send" period: those who dared to spill blood during the "Send" were sentenced to death without exception. This is still commemorated by the exhibition of a sword outside of the town hall during "Send" time.
Münster does also offer recreational areas: at the Aasee lake and in the nature park Rieselfelder, you can undertake excursions by foot or by bicycle and observe rare birds and animals.
